Magic Advertising Glasses

Jamie and Clara explore what we'd discover if we could see what advertising really tries to make us feel and want.

X-Ray Ad Detectives: See Through Advertising Tricks!

Imagine Having Magic Glasses…

Have you ever wished you could see what advertisements are REALLY trying to do to your brain? Imagine putting on a pair of special glasses that show colorful arrows pointing at your brain and heart whenever you watch a commercial! That would be like having a superpower, wouldn’t it?

Well, guess what? You don’t actually need magic glasses to become an Ad Detective. You just need to know the secret tricks that ads use to make you want things!

What Are Ads Really Trying to Do?

Advertisements are messages that companies create to make you want to buy their stuff. But they don’t just tell you about their products – they try to create special feelings in you!

For example, when you see an ice cream commercial with kids laughing and having the BEST DAY EVER, the invisible arrows might be saying:

  • “Make kids feel HAPPY when they see our ice cream!”
  • “Make kids’ tummies feel HUNGRY right now!”
  • “Make kids think they’ll have more FUN if they eat our ice cream!”

But is ice cream really magical? Does it actually make you have the best day ever? Probably not! It’s just a cold, sweet treat – which is nice, but not magical!

Sneaky Feeling Tricks

Have you ever watched a toy commercial and suddenly felt like your toys were boring? Or seen a sneaker ad that made you think you needed those shoes to be cool? That’s because ads often use the “Make You Feel Left Out” trick!

The Collection Trap

One of the sneakiest tricks is when ads make you think you need to collect ALL the toys in a set. They might show all twelve superhero figures together, making it seem like you can’t have fun unless you have every single one.

But ask yourself: do you really play with all twelve? Or do you usually just play with your favorites? Most kids find they only regularly use one or two figures, even when they have the whole set!

If you had your magic ad-seeing glasses on, you might see an arrow saying: “Make kids think they NEED the complete collection to have fun!”

The Cereal Test

Here’s a fun test to try at home: Next time you see a cereal with cartoon characters on the box or colorful marshmallows inside, ask yourself: “Would I still want this cereal if it came in a plain brown box with no cool pictures?”

If your answer is “no,” then maybe it’s the exciting packaging you want, not actually the cereal!

Famous Friends Selling Stuff

Have you noticed how your favorite cartoon characters or superheroes often appear on products? Maybe Captain Awesome is on a cereal box, or your favorite princess is on a toothbrush.

Companies pay a lot of money to use these characters because they know you already have good feelings about them. They hope those good feelings will rub off on their products!

The invisible arrow here says: “Make kids think their favorite character would want them to buy this!”

Wowza Fact!

Did you know that companies sometimes create entire TV shows just to sell toys? It’s true! Some cartoon series were created after the toys were designed, just to make kids want to buy them!

Do Grown-ups Get Tricked Too?

You might think only kids fall for advertising tricks, but SURPRISE – grown-ups get tricked too! Everyone’s brain can be influenced by clever ads.

Car commercials might have invisible arrows saying “Make adults feel cool and powerful in this car!” even though it just gets you from one place to another, just like any other car!

Fancy watch ads might say “Make people think others will respect them more with this watch!” even though most people never even notice what watch someone is wearing.

Even grown-ups who MAKE advertisements can be tricked by other ads! Our brains are naturally interested in things that promise to make us happier, cooler, or solve our problems.

Become an Ad Detective!

Now that you know about these tricks, you can become an Ad Detective! Here’s how to put on your imaginary magic glasses:

Ad Detective Questions

When you see an advertisement, ask yourself these super-detective questions:

  • How does this ad want me to FEEL?
  • What problem does it say I have that I didn’t know about?
  • Would I still want this if all my friends DIDN’T have it?
  • Would I still want this if it came in a plain package?
  • Will I still be playing with/using this a month from now?
  • Is the ad showing real life, or a made-up perfect world?

The Ad Detective Game

Turn ad-watching into a fun game! When you watch TV with your family or friends, compete to spot the most advertising tricks. You could give points for each type of trick:

  • 5 points for “You’ll be left out without this!” tricks
  • 10 points for “This will make all your problems disappear!” tricks
  • 15 points for “Everyone will think you’re cool!” tricks

The person who spots the most tricks wins!

Design Your Own Honest Ad

Here’s a super fun activity: Try creating your own HONEST advertisements! Draw a picture or write a script for a commercial that tells the WHOLE truth about a toy, cereal, or other product.

For example, an honest toy ad might say: “This robot dinosaur is really fun for about three days! After that, you might put it in your closet and forget about it. Batteries not included and it makes loud noises that might annoy your parents!”

Or an honest cereal ad: “This cereal has so much sugar that your mom will only let you have it on weekends! It turns the milk a weird blue color that might stain your favorite shirt!”

Giggle! Honest ads might not sell as many products, but they sure would be funny!

The Most Important Truth

Here’s the biggest secret that advertisements don’t want you to know: You are already awesome just the way you are!

Many ads try to make us feel like we’re not good enough, cool enough, or happy enough without their products. But that’s just not true!

You don’t need special sneakers to be a good friend. You don’t need the latest toy to have fun. You don’t need sugary cereal to have a good morning.

Things can be fun to have, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting something you see in an ad. But those things don’t make you a better or more special person – you’re already special!

Your Ad Detective Superpower

Learning to see the invisible arrows in advertisements is like having a real superpower – the power to make choices based on what YOU truly want, not what advertisements tell you to want.

And here’s the coolest part: Once you can see these tricks, they don’t work as well on you anymore! It’s like knowing how a magic trick works – it can’t fool you once you know the secret!

You can still enjoy watching funny commercials and buying things you truly want. You’re just making those choices with your eyes wide open. That’s what growing up is all about – making your own choices for your own reasons.

What Do YOU Think?

Next time you see an advertisement that makes you really want something, put on your imaginary magic glasses. What invisible arrows can you spot? What feelings is the ad trying to create in you? Are those feelings real, or are they just advertising magic?

Remember: You have the power to see past advertising tricks. Just be an Ad Detective and ask: “What is this ad really trying to make me feel and do?” Your super detective skills will do the rest!
